SYNTHESIS OF VSA-SS-DVB CHELATE CATION EXCHANGE RESIN AND-IT¢¥S ADSORPTION CHARACTERISTICS FOR HEAVY METAL IONS

Abstract
The chelate ionic exchange resins (Resin I and Resin I[) were prepared by sulfonation of 5-vinyl salicyl aldoxime-styrenedivinyl benzene copolymer(VSA-St-DVB) synthesized from the different reaction steps.
The adsorption characteristics and distribution coefficients of heavy metal ions such as Pb (1), Cr (IQ), Zn (](), Cu (]]), Fe (u), Co (11), Cd (II), Ni (I [), and Hg (] j) were investigated, using the batch method.
The ion exchange coefficients of Resin I and Resin II were respectively 4.2meq/g and 4.8 meq/g, and adsorption rate of metal ions showed fast respectively. The adsorption capacities of Cu (if), Fe(i[), Zn(ff ), Cr(ij) ions to the Resin I were maximum at pH 5-6 and those of Cu (JI ), Hg( ff ), Cd(IO, Zn( II) ions to the Resin f were maximum at pH 6^+7.
The distribution coefficients of metal ions on these Resins were increased with decreasing concentration of hydrochloric acid solution. It was observed that the heavy metal ions such as Pb (ff), Cr (] Q), Fe (] ff), and Hg (] O could be selectively separated and recovered from the wastewaters by the elution chromatography using Resin If with 1 M hydrochloric acid solution.
